Skin Care Advice

Acne & Blemish-Prone Skin

You’re not alone! Dealing with acne or even mildly blemish-prone skin affects millions of Canadians, from teenagers to adults, and both males and females.

What Causes Acne

Pimples form when your pores become clogged by sebum (an oily substance produced by your skin), dirt and dead skin cells. Sometimes a bacteria (P. Acnes) can also cause redness, swelling and puss with pimples. Acne pimples are most common on the face, however can also occur on the neck, back and arms. Often acne is genetic – if your parents experienced acne you are more likely to get it.

Acne Triggers

  • Makeup, hair and face care products can clog your pores. Choose products that are non-comedogenic (meaning they will not clog pores).
  • Things that press against your skin can make acne worse, like a phone, sports equipment (such as pads and helmet), headbands and tight clothing.
  • Washing your face too often or using harsh or scrubbing products (like facial scrubs, exfoliators, masks, toners) can strip your skin and make acne worse. While it is important to remove excess oil, dirt and bacteria, it is very important to use a gentle cleanser, like Spectro, to do so.
  • There is no scientific proof for a connection between acne and food, not even chocolate or greasy foods.

Your Skin’s Moisture Barrier

Your skin has a natural moisture barrier and it plays an important role in maintaining clear, healthy-looking skin. Your moisture barrier helps defend against external elements that cause pimples, dryness and sensitivity. When that barrier is disrupted, cracks form, allowing external elements like dirt, bacteria, pollutants and cosmetics to enter, which may lead to acne blemishes. Therefore it is important to use products that are gentle and do not disrupt your skin’s moisture barrier.
